The Republic of China invited Tom to a flora expo to write about Taiwan orchids

The government of Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, invited Tom to join more than 70 international journalists to attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition. Held from November 6, 2010 to April 25, 2011, it was the first internationally recognized exposition to take place in Taiwan, and the seventh of its kind in Asia. The expo was held in Taipei's city center in two parks created to replace a blighted urban area. The expo showcased Taipei's commitment to develop more urban green space and its achievements in tourism, catering, gardening, and biotechnology. The expo site has been converted to Taipei Expo Park. Tom wrote about Taiwan's orchid industry as part of the trips, visiting growers in the southern part of the country; the Taiwan Orchid Plantation, the world's largest orchid industry greenhouse cluster, in Tainan; and an agricultural research station in northern Taiwan.

The two Chinas story: The Republic of China (ROC) was established January 1, 1912 after a revolution the previous year. In 1949, forces led by Mao Zedong overthrew the ROC in a civil war. Mao then formed a new Communist  government, the People's Republic of China. The ROC leadership, led  by President Chiang Kai-shek, fled to the island of Formosa 90 miles off the coast of China.  Chiang Kai-shek re-established the ROC in exile on Formosa under martial law, claiming that it was still the legitimate government of China. Through the years, the ROC transitioned to a multi-party democracy, and the name Formosa eventually changed to Taiwan. Through those transitions, the official name of Taiwan has remained the Republic of China. Even though Formosa was never part of China, the PROC considers Taiwan to be a breakaway province that must be reunified with the mainland, by force if necessary.
